Vygotsky's starting complaint was that testing a learner working alone only measures what he called the "actual" developmental level, the level already completed. He argued this misses something. To show why, he described two children who tested at the same level on their own, then gave each of them harder problems with just a small amount of help: a leading question, or the first step shown.
Their solo scores had looked identical. With help, they did not: one reached problems pitched at a twelve-year-old's level, the other only a nine-year-old's. This is Vygotsky's own worked example, not a described study; he does not report the children's starting score, how many children this was tried with, or how the problems were scored. He asked the obvious question himself: are these two children mentally the same? From it he drew his formal definition of the zone of proximal development, "the distance between the actual developmental level as determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers."

Vygotsky's own conclusion was that teaching should aim just beyond what a learner can already do alone, not at what they have already mastered and not at what stays out of reach even with help.
Treat it as an experiment, not a recipe: pick a task a learner currently gets stuck on, give one small prompt before stepping in fully, and note how far that prompt actually takes them. That gap between stuck alone and fine with a nudge is your own evidence of where to teach next, not the study's.
This rates the evidence's firmness, not the idea's importance. The distinction Vygotsky draws has shaped education for decades, but his own worked example is a two-child illustration, not a designed study. There is no control group and no described method: he does not say how the two children were chosen, what the problems were, or who scored the outcome. The source is 1930s Russian psychology, translated and compiled into English in 1978, describing children in an unspecified setting, not a modern classroom or a trial. The text argues why teaching should aim just beyond solo reach; it does not report a test of that approach against any other, so it cannot show how much difference it actually makes. Treat "test what they can do with a little help, then teach just beyond that" as a well-reasoned, influential principle worth trying and watching, not as a technique a trial has proven speeds up learning.
